Who unfollowed me on Instagram?
The short answer: Instagram will never tell you directly. There's no notification, no "unfollowers" screen, and no official list. But you can still find out — reliably and safely — by comparing your own follower data over time. This page explains what's actually possible, what isn't, and how to do it without handing your password to a stranger's app.
Why Instagram won't just show you
Unfollowing is deliberately quiet on Instagram. When you unfollow someone, they get no alert — and the same courtesy applies in reverse. Instagram also doesn't keep a visible history of the event, so any tool or app claiming it can pull an "unfollower list" directly from Instagram is, at best, reconstructing it the same way described below — and at worst, making it up after harvesting your login.
One clue does exist inside the app: open a person's profile, tap their Following list, and search your own username. If you're not there, they aren't following you. That's fine for checking one suspect — useless for an account with hundreds of followers.
The three ways people try to find out — honestly rated
- Checking profiles by hand. Accurate, free, and completely safe — but painfully slow beyond a handful of names, and it only tells you who isn't following you now, not who recently left.
- "Unfollower" apps that ask for your login. These are the ones to avoid. Typing your Instagram password into a third-party app breaks Instagram's terms, can get your account flagged or banned, and is a well-worn path to account theft. If an app's first step is your password, close it.
- Your own Instagram data export. The dependable option. Instagram lets you download your complete followers and following lists. Compare today's followers against a saved copy from last month, and whoever vanished is who unfollowed you. No login shared with anyone, no rules broken.
How to find your unfollowers with the data export
- Get your data: In Instagram, go to Settings → Accounts Centre → Your information and permissions → Download your information. Choose “Some of your information”, tick Followers and following, set the format to JSON, and create the file. (Detailed walkthrough: how to download your Instagram data.)
- Save this export as your snapshot. Keep the ZIP somewhere safe — it is your "before" picture. Without an earlier snapshot, you can still see who doesn't follow you back today, but not who left last week.
- Run the check: Open the UnfollowCheck tool and drop in the ZIP. Your file is compared right in your browser — never uploaded — and you immediately see who's not following you back and which of your follow requests are still pending.
- Repeat next month: Download a fresh export and compare the followers lists. Names present last time but missing now are your unfollowers for that period.

"Unfollowed me" vs "never followed back" — they're different
It's easy to mix these up. Someone who never followed you back simply isn't on your followers list even though you follow them — they may never have followed you at all. An unfollower was on the list and later removed themselves. A single data export shows you the first group precisely. Spotting the second group takes two exports at different times — which is why saving a snapshot today is worth the two minutes it takes.
Before you worry about the number
A falling follower count is not always people leaving. Deleted and deactivated accounts vanish from your count, and Instagram periodically removes bot and spam accounts in bulk — sometimes dozens at once for larger profiles. Real unfollows happen to every account, usually for mundane reasons (inactive users, changed interests, a tidy-up of their following list). Frequently asked questions
Does Instagram tell you who unfollowed you?
No — no notification and no list anywhere in the app. The only in-app check is opening someone's Following list and searching for your username.
How can I find out who unfollowed me without a login app?
Download your Instagram data and compare it with a previous export, or check your current not-following-back list with a tool like our checker that reads your own file — no password involved.
Are unfollower apps safe?
The ones that ask for your Instagram password are not: they breach Instagram's terms, risk restrictions or a ban, and are a common route to stolen accounts. Data-export methods avoid all of that.
My count dropped but I can't find an unfollower. Why?
Deleted, deactivated, and spam-removed accounts also reduce your follower count. Those disappearances aren't people choosing to unfollow you.
Can I see exactly when someone unfollowed me?
Instagram doesn't expose an unfollow date. Comparing dated snapshots narrows it to the period between the two exports — that's the closest reliable answer available.
The bottom line
Nobody — no app, no website — can get an official unfollower list out of Instagram, because it doesn't exist. What you can do is take a snapshot of your followers today and let simple comparisons answer the question from here on. Take your first snapshot with the free checker →
