Does Instagram Notify When You Unfollow Someone?
The short answer is no. Instagram does not send a notification when you unfollow someone, and it does not put an alert in their activity feed saying you left. If you have been putting off unfollowing an account because you dread an awkward notification landing on their phone, you can relax: that notification does not exist.
That does not mean unfollowing is completely invisible. It means Instagram stays silent about it — but a person who pays attention can still work it out. Understanding the difference between "no notification" and "nobody will ever notice" is the whole point of this post.
What actually happens when you unfollow
When you tap unfollow, three quiet things happen. First, their posts and stories stop appearing in your feed. Second, your name disappears from their followers list. Third, nothing is sent to them: no push notification, no in-app alert, no email, and no message. Instagram treats following and unfollowing asymmetrically on purpose — following someone is a social signal worth announcing, while unfollowing is treated as a private decision about your own feed.
The same silence applies in reverse. If someone unfollows you, Instagram will not tell you either. Your follower count simply drops by one, with no name attached. That is why people who want to know who left have to compare snapshots of their followers list over time, rather than waiting for an alert that will never arrive.
How someone could still notice
Even without a notification, an unfollow can be spotted in a few ordinary ways:
- They check their followers list. If they open their followers and search for your name, your absence is obvious. This is most likely with small accounts, where every follower is familiar, and least likely with large accounts, where one name among thousands blends in.
- They notice your posts are gone. If you used to appear in their feed or stories regularly and suddenly do not, they may check your profile and see the Follow button back in its default state.
- They use a follower-tracking method. Just like you, they can compare their own followers list between two points in time — for example, by downloading their Instagram data and comparing the two exports — and see exactly who disappeared.
- You interacted recently. If you liked or commented on their posts yesterday and your name vanishes from their followers today, the timing makes the change easy to connect.
None of these involve Instagram telling them. They all involve a person actively looking, which is a very different thing from an automatic alert.
The exceptions that do create a notification
There are a few nearby actions that do notify the other person, and they are worth keeping separate from a plain unfollow:
- Following them again. If you unfollow and later follow them back, that new follow sends a notification — and if their account is private, it sends a follow request instead. The refollow is visible even though the unfollow was not.
- Removing them as a follower. This is a different action from unfollowing: it takes them off your followers list. Instagram does not notify them of that either, but they will find they can no longer see your posts if your account is private, and the Follow button will reappear on your profile.
- Blocking. Blocking also sends no notification, but it is far more visible in practice: your profile, posts and stories all vanish for them at once, and they cannot find you in search.
- Likes and comments. If you unlike a post or delete a comment, the original notification may disappear from their activity, but Instagram does not send a new alert saying you took it back.
A useful rule of thumb: Instagram notifies people about things you do towards them — a follow, a like, a comment, a mention — and stays quiet about things you do away from them, like unfollowing or removing a like.
What about stories, Close Friends and messages?
Unfollowing does not affect your direct messages: an existing chat thread stays exactly where it was, and neither side is notified. If you were on someone's Close Friends list, unfollowing them does not remove you from that list — only they can change it — though you will stop seeing their regular posts. And if their account is private and you unfollow, you lose access to their posts until they accept a new follow request, which is the one case where the follow-back step makes your interest visible again.
So, should you worry about unfollowing?
For most everyday unfollows, no. Clearing out accounts you no longer enjoy — old acquaintances, brands you stopped caring about, accounts that changed direction — is normal feed maintenance, and Instagram deliberately keeps it quiet. The people most likely to notice are close friends and small accounts where you are a familiar name, so if the relationship matters, a quiet unfollow followed by normal friendly interaction elsewhere is usually less awkward than a dramatic announcement. And if you are on the other side of it, remember that a vanished follower is rarely a verdict: people tidy their feeds for all kinds of reasons that have nothing to do with you, as we explain in our guide to why people unfollow on Instagram.

Frequently asked questions
Does Instagram notify when you unfollow someone?
No. Instagram sends no notification, alert or email when you unfollow someone. The other person can only find out by checking their followers list or noticing your posts are gone.
Will they know if I unfollow and then follow them back?
The unfollow itself is silent, but the new follow is not: following someone again sends them a follow notification, or a follow request if their account is private.
Does removing a follower send a notification?
No. Removing someone from your followers list does not notify them, but they will notice if your account is private, because they will lose access to your posts.
Can I see who unfollowed me if Instagram doesn't notify me?
Instagram never names them, but you can compare two snapshots of your followers list — for example, two Instagram data exports taken at different times — and see who disappeared in between.
